At the Clippers’ introductory press event on Thursday, James Harden took the opportunity to address some lingering sentiments.
Expressing his thoughts, Harden asserted that the Sixers restricted him last season, stating, “I’m not bound by a system, I am the system itself.”
Reflecting on his new role with Philadelphia, he emphasized that the team has recognized his potential for greater contributions and capabilities.
However, Harden candidly likened his Philadelphia experience to being confined, highlighting a lack of freedom to fully exhibit his scoring and playmaking prowess.
Delving further into the issue of feeling constrained by the 76ers, Harden reiterated his perspective, emphasizing his creative role on the court and the need for trust and understanding from his team.
Despite ranking second in the NBA for time handling the ball per game, as Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer pointed out, Harden felt restricted in his playmaking opportunities.
Harden also dismissed any misgivings about his compatibility with the Clippers and rejected past criticisms of his playing style.
Critiquing the prevalent narratives and opinions, Harden noted the influence they hold, and others’ reliance on them.
Whether or not he deems it equitable, Harden’s tenure with the Clippers may represent his swan song in the NBA.
Reportedly, the Clippers were the lone suitor for Harden, now 34, who has encountered discord in Houston, Brooklyn, and Philadelphia over the past three years.
