Luka Doncic’s ejection in the fourth quarter during the Los Angeles Lakers’ 136-120 defeat against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday night significantly altered the course of the game. With just under eight minutes remaining, Doncic scored a pivotal jumper that put the Lakers ahead 108-107, but after exchanging words with a fan seated courtside, he was issued a second technical foul. Referee J.T. Orr interpreted Doncic’s remarks as directed at him, which led to the ejection. However, Doncic later clarified that his comments were intended for the fan, not the official.
“I never got a fan ejected. If they talk, I talk back, but it had nothing to do with the ref,” Doncic elaborated. The fan involved, identified as Jeremy Price, corroborated that their exchange was typical banter seen in games. Price had jokingly criticized Doncic for a missed shot, prompting the player to respond with a colorful retort. He pointed out that the referee may have misinterpreted the situation, believing the remarks were meant for him.
The ejection proved to be a turning point in the match, as the Thunder took advantage, closing the game out on a 28-11 run. LeBron James reflected on the unusual circumstances, pondering why the referee reacted so personally to the interaction, especially since Doncic had already received a technical foul earlier. “It got weird after that,” James commented.
In spite of the defeat, the Lakers quickly shifted their attention to their upcoming game in Dallas, where Doncic will compete against his former team, the Mavericks, for the first time since his trade. Doncic acknowledged that he was anticipating an emotional return but stated he was prepared to meet his former fans and teammates. Concerning his technical fouls, Doncic has accrued 14 this season, just two away from an automatic suspension, necessitating that he carefully manage his emotions in upcoming games.
