Despite having limited playing time during his two 10-day contracts, P.J. Tucker is still considered a “strong candidate” to re-sign with the Knicks before the season concludes, according to Stefan Bondy of The New York Post.
Tucker’s second 10-day contract expired over the weekend, leaving him a free agent and opening up a spot on New York’s 15-man roster. With only eight games remaining in the season, Bondy mentions that the Knicks might look to bring in another player on a 10-day deal; however, Tucker is expected to secure a standard contract soon, which would make him eligible for the playoffs.
The 39-year-old forward participated in only one game during his time with New York, where he logged two minutes without scoring or grabbing any rebounds. This was his only appearance in the NBA this season, as he had previously agreed with the Clippers in October to remain inactive while they sought a trade for him. Ultimately, he was traded to Utah, then to Toronto prior to last month’s deadline, but did not see any game action for either team before being waived on February 28.
According to a source cited by Bondy, Tucker knew that playing time might not be guaranteed upon joining the Knicks; however, the team values him for his leadership qualities and vast playoff experience.
“A lot of times when you become a vet and be in the league, like young guys and stuff on the bench, they’re not going to (encourage and motivate teammates). They’re not going to have your back like that,” Tucker commented after joining the team. “So it’s always good to have vets and like-minded guys that just have each other’s back. And that’s what really makes a team strong — just knowing that they have people there and I support you whether you’re playing good or bad. We’re in it together.”
Bondy also notes that Tucker’s signing resulted in veteran forward T.J. Warren leaving New York’s Westchester affiliate. Warren had been pursuing an NBA opportunity and was the top scorer for the G League team.
