Nico Harrison may be remembered as either the least insightful general manager in history or as a brilliant strategist, depending on how his recent decision to trade Luka Doncic pans out.
During a recent press conference, he provided insight into his reasoning behind the decision to exchange Doncic for Anthony Davis from the Los Angeles Lakers.
“It’s essential to recognize that (Dallas coach Jason) Kidd and I have a shared vision, which we discuss frequently regarding the types of players we want to acquire and the culture we intend to cultivate,” Harrison explained.
“There are different layers to this, and some players naturally align with the culture, while others enhance it,” he continued. “These are distinct categories, and I genuinely believe that the new additions will positively impact our culture.”
Harrison dismissed any media implications that suggested Luka was not a good fit for the Mavericks’ culture.
“Let me be clear—I have no intention of speaking ill of any players,” Harrison said. “That serves no purpose for the team or for me. What I’m saying is that there are distinctions: some individuals fit into the culture, while others contribute to it in a different way. I am confident that the players we are bringing on board will enrich our culture.”
He asserted, “To be absolutely clear: I am the one making these decisions, and (Kidd) is behind them, so the onus is mine. I do not make decisions out of fear. Each step we take is carefully analyzed, reconsidered, and revisited. I am very aware of the weight of this decision.”
