Former NBA coach Stan Van Gundy has drawn a striking parallel between the new head coach of the Lakers, JJ Redick, and one of the most successful coaches of recent years, Steve Kerr.
Though Redick has only guided his team during preseason games as the 2024-25 season nears, Van Gundy believes there are notable similarities between Redick and Kerr.
“He’s someone who truly needed to comprehend the game and utilize his understanding of how to play it,” Van Gundy said in an interview with The Orange County Register. “It’s a concept he had to reflect on deeply. Competing in the NBA presents immense challenges for anyone and requires remarkable effort, but for some, it demands even greater commitment to excel at that level. Redick certainly fits into that category.”
“I think you can draw a parallel to what Steve Kerr achieved. There are many similarities there.”
Kerr, during his playing career, secured five championships with the Chicago Bulls.
In 2014, he transitioned to head coach of the Golden State Warriors, following a brief period in broadcasting and a role within the Suns’ front office.
The next season, he steered the Warriors to a championship and later added three more titles in 2017, 2018, and 2022.
If Redick can replicate even a fraction of Kerr’s success in coaching, he will be heading in the right direction.
It’s worth mentioning that Kerr had the advantage of exceptional rosters during most of his championship runs, illustrating the importance of a capable front office.
Fortunately for Redick, he possesses the experienced All-Star talents of LeBron James and Anthony Davis on his roster, both of whom are keen to secure another championship with the Lakers.
