JJ Redick offered some compelling thoughts about his new team following the Lakers’ early pre-season games.
He combined his enthusiasm for basketball with his appreciation for Christopher Nolan films to describe the current situation of the Lakers.
“The Lakers have a LIMBO rate,” Redick explained. “LIMBO is when you’re neither crashing nor recovering. Last year, we recorded the worst LIMBO rates in the league. Ideally, it would be better for everyone to crash, so we could then deal with the consequences. Therefore, it’s essential to avoid limbo. I think that concept was from ‘Inception,’ and we all understand the perils of being trapped there.”
Redick believes the team is successfully generating strong scoring opportunities, but the challenge remains in translating those chances into actual points.
“I think we’ve done a pretty good job of creating quality looks,” Redick noted. “There were a few forced shots in transition and off the dribble in the first half. In the second half, after grabbing a couple of offensive rebounds, I felt we could have shared the ball better to secure a more optimal shot. Nonetheless, I value the overall mindset of taking shots when they’re set and prioritizing solid three-pointers.”
One player who has stood out to Redick defensively, despite not being primarily recognized for it, is Austin Reaves.
“I never thought of him as weak defensively, but he competes incredibly hard on that end,” Redick said after the Lakers’ practice on Tuesday. “He knows his role. He positions himself well—if he needs to adjust, he does. If he should be the low man, he fulfills that role. If he needs to be at the nail, he’s there. He consistently displays many positive qualities on the court.”
