The Cleveland Cavaliers have officially re-signed center Tristan Thompson, as confirmed today by Koby Altman, the Cavaliers’ President of Basketball Operations, from the Cleveland Clinic Courts.
Thompson (6-10, 250), an essential player in the franchise’s first-ever NBA championship in 2016, played in 49 games last season, averaging 3.3 points and 3.6 rebounds in 11.2 minutes per game. Selected by the Cavaliers as the No. 4 overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, he was the highest-drafted Canadian-born player in NBA history at that time. Within the organization, Thompson ranks among the all-time leaders in several categories: second in offensive rebounds (2,188), third in total rebounds (5,567), fifth in defensive rebounds (3,379), fifth in blocks (461), fifth in games played (668), and eighth in minutes played (17,922). Notably, he holds the record for the longest streak of consecutive games played in Cavaliers history, appearing in 447 consecutive games from February 10, 2012, to April 4, 2017.
With 13 years of NBA experience, Thompson has played in 779 regular season games (478 as a starter) across his tenures with Cleveland, Boston, Sacramento, Indiana, and Chicago, posting averages of 8.7 points with a shooting percentage of .521 and 8.1 rebounds over 25.8 minutes per game.
He started all 21 playoff games during the Cavaliers’ championship run in 2016 and has participated in 104 playoff games (70 starts) throughout his career, with averages of 6.5 points on .557 shooting and 7.2 rebounds across 25.2 minutes. Additionally, he leads the franchise in offensive rebounds in postseason play (297) and is second in total rebounds (686), third in defensive rebounds (389), second in games played (88), fourth in blocks (68), ninth in points scored (613), and ninth in field goals made (231).
