NBA Commissioner Adam Silver recognized that there was minimal dialogue about expansion during this week’s board of governors meetings in New York.
Nonetheless, he mentioned that the topic will be revisited at some point during “this season.”
“This meeting did not see extensive discussion on expansion, primarily because—this is not due to a lack of interest—we have conveyed to [potential franchise bidders] that we are not quite ready,” he remarked during the press conference. “We have communicated to our board that we intend to tackle this issue this season. Right now, we are unprepared. There is excitement surrounding the process, but we have not yet reached a stage of making conclusive decisions about specific markets or the actual possibility of expansion.”
“We informed our board that we intend to address this topic this season, although we aren’t ready at the moment. Still, I believe there is substantial interest in the process, and we haven’t arrived at a point where we can make definitive selections regarding locations or even, frankly, consider expansion.”
The topic of expansion has consistently surfaced within the NBA over recent years.
In discussions about new teams, Seattle and Las Vegas have emerged as the leading candidates.
Prominent figures like LeBron James and Kevin Durant have expressed their interest in taking on ownership or management roles within these potential franchises.
This topic often arises during conversations with Silver, who has reiterated on multiple occasions that the league will consider expansion after finalizing the new collective bargaining agreement and concluding the media rights deal.
