Jayson Tatum appeared on Jimmy Fallon this week and conveyed his conviction that he would secure the MVP for the 2024-25 season, which elicited a reaction from Kendrick Perkins.
During NBA Today, Perkins was questioned about Tatum’s prediction and he spoke openly about it, relating his comments to his own experiences as a professional player.
“He’s egotistical, and that’s a courteous way to phrase it,” Perkins stated. “I’m not being cynical here, but concentrating on one’s own interests, pleasure, or well-being without regard for others,” Perkins elaborated. “Here’s the crux of the matter: I acknowledge that basketball is a team-oriented sport, and I realize that championships have had a crucial influence on crafting many players’ legacies. Even now, I am still seen as an NBA Champion.”
“If an athlete aims for personal accolades, I wholeheartedly endorse that. Back in 2009 and 2010, [Kevin Garnett] and I actually got into a serious conflict that almost tarnished our friendship after we celebrated our championship victory because KG felt that I was attempting to make the All-Star team, and I indeed had those goals. I had my personal ambitions. The Big Fella needed some time to reflect, and a few days later he approached me and said, ‘Perk, I should want you to make the All-Star team; you should pursue that for yourself.’ Thus, I don’t have an issue with a player being somewhat egotistical and aiming for personal achievements.”
