The Lakers find themselves frequently caught up in trade talks and rumors surrounding player acquisitions, particularly because LeBron James and Anthony Davis are clearly in need of support.
Recent reports have been scarce about the Lakers, as attention shifts to the Olympics. Nevertheless, a recent episode of The Lowe Post podcast by ESPN’s Zach Lowe hinted at positive developments for the Lakers.
Lowe strongly suggested the impending move of Jerami Grant, the forward from the Trail Blazers, to Los Angeles.
“Should we start preparing those Jerami Grant-Lakers jerseys now?” Lowe mused while chatting with ESPN’s Tim McMahon. “Maybe it’s time to make a purchase.”
Amidst being 30 years old and on a lucrative five-year, $160 million contract, Grant is seen as a better fit for a team like the Lakers that aims for immediate success rather than the Blazers, who are in the midst of a rebuilding phase.
The main concern lies in what Portland may demand in exchange for Grant and if the Lakers can fulfill those requests.
One asset the Lakers hold is D’Angelo Russell, but according to The Athletic’s Jovan Buha, Russell is not a prized possession in this specific situation.
“I’ve been informed that Portland isn’t keen on acquiring D-Lo due to their surplus of guards,” Buha revealed on the “Buha’s Block” podcast on July 26. “Thus, it doesn’t align with their strategies.”
During a discussion with Sean Deveney from Heavy Sports earlier this month, a Western Conference executive delved into the complexities of a potential Jerami Grant trade.
“Jerami Grant is a capable player, a proficient shooter, and a committed defender when driven. He brings a range of skills to a team. Nonetheless, he usually functions as a third-choice player. Despite his impressive stats on struggling teams, no one is eager to make a significant trade for a player who scores 20 points on a weak team but only 13 on a good one.”
