With the advent of free agency, rumors of Chris Paul potentially allying with the Lakers have re-emerged, alongside subdued conversations of such an acquisition.
At the moment, Paul is poised to collect an unguaranteed $30 million for the 2024-25 season with the Warriors, giving the organization the flexibility to cut ties with him before the June 28 deadline.
NBA correspondent Marc Stein has indicated that both basketball teams from Los Angeles are contemplating the seasoned point guard.
“The Warriors, according to league sources, are proactively exploring trade negotiations involving Paul’s favorable contract, prior to the Wednesday draft and the chance of extending Friday’s cut-off into July, provided Paul agrees to this modification (as previously outlined here),” Stein disclosed. “Expect Paul’s status to become a topic of considerable interest at Monday afternoon’s media session with Warriors General Manager Mike Dunleavy Jr., who will surely face questions pertaining to the career trajectory of Klay Thompson, an impending free agent who has spent his entire tenure with the team.
Based on what I’ve gathered, should Paul become available on the market, the Clippers and the Lakers would both be drawn to him. Even though Paul’s desire to stay close to his family in Los Angeles is well recognized, there isn’t a unanimous agreement among the Lakers’ higher-ups to pursue him, in spite of Paul’s notable kinship with LeBron James.”
LeBron and Paul stand as among the most experienced NBA contenders currently in action, having shared more than 19 vigorous seasons of rivalry.
