Only a handful of weeks after securing head coach Jason Kidd for the foreseeable future, the Martins have confirmed that general manager Nico Harrison will remain on board, announcing today through a press release the finalization of a new multiyear deal for their top executive.
“Nico Harrison has demonstrated his leadership and expertise within the operations of the Dallas Martins,” proclaimed organization owner Patrick Dumont. “His tactical vision and dedication to our athletes and staff have propelled our team to successive playoff appearances over three seasons and to the finals this cycle. We’re ecstatic about his prolonged tenure and are looking forward to how he’ll further strengthen the foundation of success he’s laid down.”
Harrison began his tenure as an executive with the Mavericks in 2021 following an impressive nineteen-year streak with Nike and is wrapping up the third year of his original four-year contract. With Dallas contending in the 2024 NBA Finals, securing an extension with Harrison became imperative, ensuring his leadership wouldn’t enter the next season under a cloud of uncertainty.
Harrison’s key moves since taking charge include the hiring of Kidd as head coach, finalizing a rookie scale extension for Luka Doncic during his first summer, trading for Kyrie Irving at the 2023 deadline, drafting Dereck Lively, and bringing on both P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford at this year’s trade deadline.
Despite an underwhelming 38-44 record in the 2022/23 season, the Mavericks’ achievements include a 52-30 record and Western Conference finals appearance in ’21/22 as well as a 50-32 record along with an NBA Finals appearance this term. Altogether, Dallas has amassed a 140-106 (.569) regular season record under Harrison’s guidance, coupled with a postseason metric of 21-14 (.706).
“I’m immensely grateful to Patrick, the entire Dumont and Adelson clan for their unwavering confidence and trust, and to Mark for his boldness in choosing someone off the beaten path,” Harrison remarked in an acknowledgement. “Right from the start, Patrick and his kin have included me as a member of their inner circle, and I consider it a honor to work alongside them, as well as Jason Kidd, as we strive to establish an enduring ethos of greatness in Dallas.”
