When addressing the situation in which he engaged in light-hearted banter with Kevin Durant following a series of successful shots during Game 1 of the Minnesota Timberwolves’ playoff victory against the Phoenix Suns, Anthony Edwards clarified his intent.
Edwards’ outstanding performance, which included scoring 18 points in the third quarter, played a significant role in the Timberwolves’ commanding 120-95 win and a 1-0 series lead.
In a postgame statement, Edwards openly admitted, “It’s common knowledge here that he’s my all-time favorite player.”
Describing the experience, he added enthusiastically, “Undoubtedly, it was one of the most thrilling moments of my life.”
Furthermore, the Wolves’ standout player showered Durant with praise.
“He effortlessly nailed 4 or 5 consecutive shots like a breeze,” noted Edwards. “At that point, I couldn’t help but admire him and think, ‘wow, his talent is remarkable.’ … He’s unparalleled in his skills… He’s exceptional.”
Earlier, Edwards had expressed his excitement about competing against the Suns in the playoffs as it allowed him to face fellow Team USA members Durant and Devin Booker.
“Now that I know these two will be my teammates at the Olympics, it’s a matter of pride,” he shared with ESPN reporter Malika Andrews earlier this week. “That’s motivation enough for me.”
During the conversation, Edwards also mentioned that facing the Suns in the playoffs was his preferred matchup.
“This matchup is what I was looking forward to since they have two of the best shooting guards in the league,” he stated to Andrews. “Booker has been a standout shooting guard for a while now.”
The Timberwolves and Suns will meet again in Game 2 on Tuesday.
