In a recent announcement, Nicholas Kerr, the son of Steve Kerr, has been named the new head coach of the Santa Cruz Warriors. He is not shying away from the fact that some people may believe he was given the position due to his relation to the Golden State’s head coach.

Speaking to the Mercury News, Nicholas Kerr acknowledged, “I would never have gotten into the NBA without a family connection. I don’t blame anyone for saying I have privilege, they’re right… I had the door wide open for me.”

However, Seth Cooper, Nicholas Kerr’s predecessor, refutes the claims of nepotism. Cooper believes that Nicholas earned the role based on his work within the organization. “You look at a guy who might’ve spent time on the Golden State staff in the video and player development world and then was an assistant coach, and last year, [the] top assistant with us in Santa Cruz, that person — with the natural progression — would become a head coach,” Cooper explained to the Mercury News. Cooper also noted that Nicholas had always shown dedication, hard work, and a desire to improve as a coach.

At the age of 30, Nicholas Kerr has big ambitions to follow in his father’s footsteps and become an NBA coach. Steve Kerr has achieved tremendous success, winning four NBA titles as a coach and an additional five titles as a player.
