The Houston Rockets have announced that Ime Udoka will be the new head coach of the team, making him the 15th head coach in franchise history.
Udoka previously coached the Boston Celtics in the 2021-22 season, where he helped the team improve from a .500 record to win 51 games and make it to the NBA Finals. Rockets General Manager Rafael Stone expressed his excitement over Udoka’s appointment, noting that his “intelligence, drive and toughness” were exactly what they were looking for in a coach. Prior to joining the Celtics, Udoka served as an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs, Philadelphia 76ers, and Brooklyn Nets, all of which made the playoffs during his tenure.
However, it is worth noting that Udoka was suspended and eventually dismissed from his position in Boston due to an improper relationship with a staff member. Despite this, the Rockets expressed their confidence in Udoka and his abilities. As a former NBA player, Udoka spent parts of seven seasons in the league, playing for various teams such as the Portland Trail Blazers and the San Antonio Spurs.
