There’s More to the Hex on the Philadelphia 76ers Than Just Rookies Getting Hurt

The Philadelphia 76ers have faced an exceptional number of bizarre occurrences throughout their history. Their devoted followers must now be resorting to unconventional methods like burning sage and appealing to the basketball deities in hopes of reversing the mysterious spell that has plagued their team. Let’s take a peek at the series of misfortunes that have unfolded in Philly over the years:

THE SAGA OF ANDREW BYNUM

After clinching consecutive championships as the starting center for the Lakers, Andrew Bynum was traded to Philadelphia in 2012. However, almost immediately, he suffered a knee injury while engaging in the seemingly harmless activity of bowling during the offseason.

Expecting a comeback around the All-Star break, it was later revealed that his knees were deteriorating rapidly. Bynum had to undergo knee surgery that ended his season, and he left the team in the offseason to embark on a similarly ill-fated journey in Cleveland. Remarkably, he never stepped foot on the court for the Sixers, with his most memorable moments in Philly revolving around his eclectic array of hairstyles.

SAM HINKIE’S BIZARRE FAREWELL LETTER

When Sam Hinkie decided to step down as the general manager of the 76ers in 2016, he bid adieu with quite an eccentric resignation letter. Spanning a whopping 7,000 words, the letter was a conglomeration of quotes from historical figures like Abraham Lincoln, modern innovators like Elon Musk, and even featured an analogy involving an extinct flightless bird.

Well, that’s certainly an unconventional way to resign from a job.

MARKELLE FULTZ’S MOM INSTALLS SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS IN HIS RESIDENCE

Adding to Markelle Fultz’s challenges at the time, The Washington Post disclosed in 2018 that his mother, Ebony, had installed surveillance cameras in Fultz’s home during his debut season.

The report also mentioned her requesting some of Fultz’s acquaintances to sign nondisclosure agreements for reasons that remain unclear. A source relayed to The Post, “There’s undoubtedly some peculiar stuff happening with the mother, her excessive involvement, and protectiveness. The optimal scenario would be if his mom takes a step back for a while and allows him some breathing space.”

Ebony chose not to directly address the allegations, simply stating that her actions were motivated by concern for her son’s well-being.

PREMATURE CONFETTI DROP BY PHILADELPHIA ARENA STAFF LEADS TO SIXERS’ LOSS

During Game 3 of Philadelphia’s second-round clash with Boston in 2018, the Sixers appeared to have secured victory when Marco Belinelli sank what seemed to be a game-winning shot. The arena staff promptly showered the court with confetti in celebration. However, it came to light that Belinelli’s foot was on the line, meaning the shot merely tied the game instead of clinching it. To their chagrin, the Sixers eventually succumbed in overtime.

THE BRYAN COLANGELO SECRET SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNT SCANDAL

In 2018, the 76ers were embroiled in a public relations nightmare when The Ringer unveiled an investigation into Bryan Colangelo, who was serving as the team’s general manager and president of basketball operations at the time. The report alleged that Colangelo utilized up to five covert social media accounts to criticize his forerunner, Sam Hinkie, as well as various 76ers players, including Joel Embiid and Jahlil Okafor.
