The Biggest Sporting Events Still to Come In 2021

After considerable disruption and disappointment in 2020, with the Covid-19 pandemic resulting in the postponement of numerous sporting events, sports enthusiasts all over the world have eagerly awaited resumption of play. Thankfully, 2021 promises a packed calendar of spectacular events.

Although international travel restrictions remain in place in many countries, preventing football fans from following their team across Europe for Euro 2021, enthusiasm remains as strong as ever, with 20 million England fans predicted to have watched their team’s match against the Ukraine in Rome following England’s epic 2-0 win against Germany.

Other elite sporting fixtures going ahead in 2021 include Wimbledon, the Tour de France, and the Austrian Formula One Grand Prix. Market-leading online betting company 1xBet will cover a comprehensive range of events throughout 2021, with the 1xBet Exchange offering bettors improved odds and facilitating lay betting, arbitrage betting, and 1X2 betting.

The Olympics

Postponed from 2020, the Tokyo Games will feature a record 339 events and 33 competitions held across 42 different venues.

The Tokyo Olympics will incorporate several new Olympic sports including karate, baseball, sport climbing, skateboarding, and surfing. In addition to its new sports, the 2021 Olympics will also integrate 15 new disciplines specially designed to promote equality and encourage female participation, including the 1,500-meter women’s and 4×100 meter mixed event in swimming, and a mixed team event in archery.

Just as five new sports have been added, several have been removed including lacrosse, Basque pelota, and tug of war.

Despite concerns over an increase in Covid cases in Japan, the Tokyo Olympics are due to start on the 23rd July 2021.

Welcoming fans back to the Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre, the two-week tournament will comprise 25 tournament sessions in total, with the New York venue operating at 100% capacity.

USTA CEO Mike Dowse said that the organization was extremely excited to welcome its incredible fans back to the event, explaining that although USTA was proud to hold the event in 2020, it missed having fans on-site, recognizing that they are a large part of what makes the event unlike any other.

Running from the 30th of August to the 12th of September 2021, the US Open will continue to adhere to CDC Covid-related guidelines.

The Ryder Cup

Postponed from 2020, the three-day Ryder Cup will take place at Whistling Straits, Wisconsin, commencing on the 24th of September 2021. Europe will head to the event hoping to beat the US for a fourth time in five matches. As Europe’s captain Padraig Harrington indicated, the postponement could cause significant problems for the game’s older players, with players who would have made the team in 2020 missing out and being replaced by younger players. Nevertheless, as Harrington points out, the delay will have benefited other players, providing an extra year for novices to mature into serious talents.
