Poirier ‘Upsets’ McGregor For Biggest Career Victory

Most places you look at currently say that Dustin Poirier, a big underdog as far as betting is concerned, came out of his bout with UFC and pop culture mainstay Conor McGregor with an upset victory. That, though, might not be the case. Sure, he was able to do something he couldn’t manage back in 2014 (get out of the first round against the Irishman) and he was also able to knock him out, something no one had managed to do before. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s an upset, right?

Perhaps McGregor’s time is over, or near over, even if he does stick around for more fights. Poirier and McGregor exchanged blows in the first couple of rounds of the lightweight fight, but in the second Poirier made it all pay off as he continuously hit his opponent with hard punches, forcing the official to step in and call for the bell. The TKO came 2:32 into the second round, and it now means that Poirier could be considered a serious contender for the title. What it means, however, for McGregor is much less clear.
