The fans were not physically present at Tuesday night’s match, but it was still an occasion worth remembering. The US beat the Canadian side to take first place in the World Junior Hockey Championship, despite the hosting team being heavily favoured to win.
Team USA linked arms to sing their national anthem, throwing up their sticks and gloves to celebrate their 2-0 victory when the game ended. “I think we surprised them in the first two periods with how well we played below their hashmarks,” said Tournament MVP Trevor Zegras, who took a goal and an assist this game.
“You could tell they hadn’t seen that kind of ground game from any other team in the tournament.”
For the Canadians, it was a humbling experience. The team did not lose a single match and were hoping to hold their winning position from last year. In comparison, the US finished in sixth place last year, and had an unpromising start to this tournament, losing 5-3 to Russia on the opening day.
The Russians also made it through to the end of the tournament, facing Finland earlier on Tuesday after being defeated 5-0 by Canada in the semi-finals. Finland won the match 4-1, taking the bronze medals.
