Harry Kane and Gareth Southgate named in Queen’s honours roll

Harry Kane and Gareth Southgate are on Queen’s honours list

Gareth Southgate, England’s coach, and Harry Kane, the team’s captain, have reportedly been recognized in Queen Elizabeth’s honours list in the New Year for their surprising performance in the World Cup semi-finals.

Shifting focus from soccer to cycling, Geraint Thomas emerged victorious in the Tour de France held in July. Thomas was also recently chosen as the recipient of this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, along with being conferred with an OBE. Also, former England cricket captain Alastair Cook and ex-rugby skipper Bill Beaumont have both been knighted.

After enduring decades of disappointment in major tournaments, the English soccer team reportedly achieved one of their best overseas performances in the World Cup earlier this year. The 48-year-old coach Southgate played a pivotal role in Russia’s unexpected success, transforming the team’s culture, which culminated in their progress to the UEFA Nations League finals and his appointment as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire.

Former England defender Southgate expressed his hope that all those who supported him throughout his career would feel immense pride. He attributed the honour he received to the guidance and assistance he received from others. Kane was granted the accolade of Member of the Order of the British Empire. After claiming the Golden Boot for being the top scorer in the World Cup, the 25-year-old striker scored six goals to help Southgate’s team reach the final.
