In Wednesday night’s game against the Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers starter Kenta Maeda suffered from a strained hip and left the game in the second inning. It is very likely that the team will put him on the disabled list which currently would make the Dodgers four of their five opening day rotation members on the disabled list.
In Thursday’s game against the Phillies, Clayton Kershaw is expected to start the game so that will change the scenario but the rotation sphere is still short. On Monday, Brock Stewart started and was optioned to Triple-A the following day. Now, without Maeda, the Dodgers starting pitchers comprises Kershaw, Ross Stripling, Walker Buehler and Alex Wood in their rotation. However, the team still needs someone else to start by Sunday.
The Dodgers could have thought of getting Stewart back, but he would have required someone else to be placed on the disabled list to come back within ten days of being optioned. Maeda can be that DL move if the team chose to do so but there is also the matter of the bullpen being levied with tax heavily in the last two days.
On Tuesday, Daniel Hudson threw 47 pitches in two innings and is certainly won’t available for at least two days. Scott Alexander and Erik Goeddel both have pitched an inning in the last two days, and the Dodgers have only used a pitcher three days consecutively in the last six baseball months so that the team could be down too.
After Tuesday’s game, Dave Roberts said that the Dodgers would ‘add an arm or two’ on Wednesday. Adam Liberatore will mostly be considered as one of the arms. He was optioned on May 19, and as he was down for at least ten days, he has chances of returning.
